Story and photos by Rose Riot
Hot, crowded, moody, sultry and sweaty are the words to describe A Perfect Circle's (APC) performance at The Tabernacle in Atlanta on July 20. APC is one of the many creative undertakings by frontman Maynard James Keenan. The band started in 1999 and has had an ever changing all-star line up. The band recently came out of hiatus to tour...
I was excited beyond measure when my request for a photo pass for A Perfect Circle was honored. I have been asked repeatedly who I would most love to photograph, one of my dream subjects has been Maynard. I have wanted to shoot Maynard because of his elusiveness.
If one didn't know any better, one might think that this performer was camera shy. Maynard is known for standing behind obstacles and at the back of the stage, challenges for any rock photographer. I have always welcomed the more difficult shoots as I find that they force me to be creative.
Maynard lived up to his reputation of being hard to photograph, standing in the dark, left corner, completely back lit. He often turned his back to the stage and had his hands gripping the mic thus covering his face. Maynard stood mainly in one spot and skulked back and forth and arching up and down.
This movement and lighting added to the moody creepiness to the show. The stage was set with army paraphernalia perhaps sending a political message especially when the band played a cover of John Lennon's Imagine.
Out of the three bands I have seen Maynard front, APC was the least threatening. When I saw Tool, I felt like I was being abducted by aliens, when I saw Puscifer, I felt like I had taken mushrooms. A Perfect Circle has a distinct quality in their sound that sets them apart from the other shows.
Maynard's voice was as sweet as ever and the band were consummate professionals. The show was sold out and the enthusiasm of the crowd that knew every word to every song, could not be matched.
I have an enormous amount of respect for Maynard's art and vision and I'm looking forward to the new Puscifer album that comes out in October.
